In 2007, Pray Lubbock, alongside Mayor David Miller and County Judge Tom Head, initiated the HEART for Prayer campaign to call the city to prayer for five key concerns: Hope, Economic Blessing, Authenticity in Relationships, Rain, and Teens’ Safety. The campaign began with city-wide prayer and fasting on February 18, focusing on God’s blessing for Lubbock.
The results were notable:
• Hope for the Hopeless: Efforts to address homelessness saw growth, with new programs like the One Stop Shop, multi-congregational ministries, and neighborhood outreach making a significant impact.
• Economic Stewardship: Lubbock’s economy thrived with low unemployment, strong business growth, and one of the best cotton crops in recent years.
• Authenticity in Relationships: While difficult to measure, the campaign prompted a deeper reflection on integrity in relationships, with some challenges leading to positive, authentic connections.
• Rain: The city saw five inches more rainfall than average, marking a positive impact on crops and water reserves.
• Teens’ Safety: After a troubling year of teen traffic deaths in 2006, prayers for teen safety led to no fatalities in the same period of 2007, along with slight improvements in teen health.
